Investigation of salinity impact on rate and amplitude of the seasonal water temperature changes in a fjord in Western Norway

This study in physics of fjords and lakes investigates the impact of salinity on density stratification. The hypothesis of a fjord being more stratified and warming/cooling faster than a freshwater lake is formulated. Data is gathered using a kayak, long temperature probe and two methods of water sample collection. Temperature and salinity data is collected throughout the year 2014 in Gandsfjord and Stokkavatnet. The equation of state is used to calculate density from salinity, temperature and pressure data. The contradiction of the data compared to the hypothesis is analysed and causes are identified. This study may be of interest to fish farmers, geologists and people who monitor pollution in water bodies.
