Antibiotic consumption for acne treatment can be changed if we evaluate the consumption patterns. In my project I conducted two experiments: A laboratory experiment which examined tetracycline’s effect on normal skin flora, and a questionnaire survey which mapped the doctors’ treatment strategies for acne. The laboratory experiment showed that the effect of tetracycline on the skin flora was reduced after 10 days, on average 21%. The questionnaire survey showed a varied diagnostics and treatment pattern for the doctors questioned. If the group of doctors with a high consumption of tetracycline changed their treatment protocol so their consumption was the same as for the group who used a low amount, the total consumption of tetracycline for acne treatment would be considerably reduced.
