PARIS, 17 OCTOBER 1961: What caused the Algerian demonstration, the French police violence and the following suppression of this confrontation?
A history project in which the aim is to investigate the causes to what happened in Paris 17 October 1961. Parisian citizens with Algerian ethnicity demonstrated against the racist policies being imposed on them. The Paris Police, with the instruction to maintain order, attacked the masses, and many were killed. There are significant uncertainties concerning what happened this night, because the incident was, for a long time, suppressed by French authorities. In this investigation, 17 October 1961 is evaluated in the context of the Algerian independence war, and the fact that it occurred in a West European capital post-WWII is also discussed.
