When memory flies away

Omeprazole is a drug used for the treatment of gastric related disorders, however, it has been linked to side effects at a neurological level due to its impact in vitamin B12 metabolic pathways. In order to evaluate the effects of Omeprazole a memory test and a reproduction test were performed in fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) using 1ppm (recommended daily human ingestion dose); 0.1 ppm and 0.01 ppm of Omeprazole and its commercial formula Omezolan.
This is the first study presenting an impact in reproduction and the first study performed with Omeprazole in invertebrate organisms. Also this is one of the fewer studies that present a negative impact in memory. The impact of the obtained results in society and in the environment will serve as base for further valuable studies.
